PowerDig’s Innovative Zonal Flexibility Approach Highlighted at CIRED 2024
We are excited to share that the PowerDig team presented their research, on congestion management strategies at the CIRED 2024 conference held in Vienna. This global event, spanning two days from June 19 20 brought together experts from corners of the world to exchange ideas on advancements in power distribution and energy management.

The paper titled “Enhancing Congestion Management in Electric Grids through Market Design for Dynamic Zonal Flexibility” delves into the challenges posed by integrating energy sources and meeting escalating power demands driven by electrification. With the influx of distributed energy resources (DERs) into the grid effective congestion management is essential for ensuring stability and optimizing capacity usage.
Our study introduces a market design approach for congestion management utilizing zones based on grid congestion levels. Unlike methods, this strategy assigns zones post-day market operations enabling a more responsive and efficient utilization of grid capacity. The dynamic zonal flexibility market (FM) was evaluated against flexible resource deployment and conventional redispatch techniques. The findings suggest that the zonal FM performs close to a nodal FM showcasing potential for reducing congestion management expenses.
Furthermore, the research underscores the advantages of zonal FMs which can offer efficiency comparable to nodal markets while providing practical benefits, in real-world scenarios. By reducing the costs associated with distributed energy resources (DERs) this method facilitates their incorporation leading to a power system that’s more adaptable and robust.
